DESCRIPTION
Pawnbrokers specialize in commercial goods such as jewellery and electronics. In Bytom – the “Polish Detroit”, a pawn shop run by Mrs. Jola and Mr. Wiesiek actually buys everything that people bring with them in urgent need. Perhaps the largest project of its kind in Europe – the scale of the activity is impressive – shows the condition of the inhabitants of a city that is becoming poorer as more mines close. Mrs. Jola and Mr. Wiesiek are trying to save their business, but also their relationship.

— ŁUKASZ KOWALSKI, Polish director, journalist and author of television programmes. Graduated in social communication from the Silesian University in Katowice and the Wajda School. Author of more than one hundred and seventy short films, intervention and investigative reports on television. In his work he deals with difficult and controversial subjects, always putting people in the foreground.
