DESCRIPTION
During the First World War, Rafał, a young journalist who wants to become a writer, is put in a prison cell. The fellow prisoners are the famous cashier Szpicbródka and the former monk Sykstus, who murdered the husband of his mistress. In the eyes of the selfish journalist, they automatically become the heroes of his brilliant future novel. The director focuses his attention on the intellectual struggles and peripetitions of the writer. The film is an adaptation of Władysław Terlecki’s prose, the plot often plays into the mind and imagination of the main character.

— WOJCIECH JERZY HAS (1925-2000), Polish director and documentary filmmaker, lecturer and rector of PWSFTviT in Łódź from 1990 to 1996. He is described as a visionary of Polish cinema. He focused on isolation, transience and purpose. His action is determined by adaptations of literary works that are very visual and operate by leaps in time. Each of his stories creates a world of its own, in which he looks at his protagonists, often outsiders with mentally confused psyche who do not find themselves in the surrounding reality.FILMOGRAPHY
